Escape Clause A Virgil Flowers Novel John Sandford Books

Escape Clause A Virgil Flowers Novel John Sandford Books
This is not so much a thriller but a satire. Sandford subtly or obviously made fun of a lot of subjects to count. He reveled at the opportunity to inject the absurdity on many of today's society (cell phone for example). IMO, this isn't a bad thing. It gave me quite a few LOL moments reading it. Davenport hit you on the head fast and furious. I fell in love with Davenport books right from the first one. Flowers is a slow burn. I didn't find the first couple of books interesting. After all, Flowers is a mellowish sort and methodical. He's not gun play and vengeance. However, at this point I really enjoy reading Flowers books. His cases always start out small before becoming outrageous. It matches perfectly with his personality and approach. I also prefer his love life to be under-developed. If I want to read a book about a cool guy and his love life, I'd go for romance novels. IMO, Frankie et al should be kept in the background.

Escape Clause A Virgil Flowers Novel John Sandford Books Reviews
I listened to the audio book and as usual John Sandford and the narrator Eric Conger delivered, it is a good book. It started off a little rough for me with the kidnapping of the tigers but then the investigation began and distracted from the discomfort. This was an entertaining novel with 2 different story lines happening at the same time. I like the fact that Sanford included incidents that show the messy aspect of police work - going through a yard to catch a suspect and being threatened by another home owner who thinks you are a peeping tom - that is something that I see happening in real life. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it for persons who like a procedural novel.
Good story. I always enjoy reading of Flowers' adventures. Nice complexities in the layout of the suspense. Can't put a finger exactly on why it did not meet my expectations for 5 stars. Seemed tho it took a bit of a while to capture my attention to want to find out what was next, tho the story line was expected and did not hold much in the way of surprises as it unfolded. I've read many Sanford novels with more 'edge of the seat' suspense.
Escape Clause is a very predictable and familiar entry in the Virgil Flowers series. It follows Sandford's usual formula the talented but irreverent cop, an odd crime that escalates into murder and mayhem, the inevitable scrapes and risks, and culminating with the capture/end of the bad guy(s). With his prolific output of 2-4 books/year, it seems Sandford is writing the same book again and again and only changing some of the details. Nevertheless, the formula works; like most of his entries, Escape Clause is an easy, entertaining, and quick read; perfect for a snowy weekend, beach, or airplane ride. Just don't expect much in the way of "depth" or fine prose.
The only problem I have with John Sandford's novels is that it is too long a wait until the next one is published. This latest effort returns to Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil "that Eff'n" Flowers. Flowers is tasked by his bosses to recover some property taken in a very unique and unusual heist. Unfortunately, Flowers doesn't have much help, is working against a very tight deadline, and is under heavy pressure from the public and the press to get results. Eventually, the theft turns to murder when the criminal "mastermind" disposes of several accomplices to elude capture. Along the way, we meet Flower's new girlfriend Frankie, Frankie's sister Sparkle, and Sparkle's part time Catholic priest boyfriend. Also involved are a Chinese millionaire, his jealous and greedy son, and a family of small time Armenian criminals with an interesting sense of honor and obligation. Last but not least we have a parade of eccentrics in the business of selling alternative medicines. All of this eventually fits together in a startling conclusion. This book has a lighter tone than some of Sandford's previous books and it makes for a pleasant change. Highly recommended.
I'm a big fan of Sandford and his main characters Virgil Flowers or Lucas Davenport-- he makes them "real" and accessible for the readers.
They have flaws, everything doesn't go as planned, and they can be wrong.
The language is often conversational, raw, and manly, if silly at times, and makes me think of my friends and me at the bar or watching the game on TV. We kid good naturedly, though sometimes a bit vulgar! Flowers has problems with women and his cases often lead him into complex and sometimes funny situations.
Plot seems staightforward at first-- Virgil has been tasked with recovering two Tigers (very valuable in terms of Chinese Medicine) which were stolen from the zoo. He's not thrilled with the job, but once he gets into it , he realizes the stakes are very high and there is a lot to deal with-- some of which overlaps into other cases and territories. It helps if you are aware of previous cases that involved Flowers and Davenport!!
I would encourage anyone who hasn't read Sandford to go back to book one and READ THEM ALL!! Outstanding stuff!
I am a Virgil Flowers/Lucas Davenport/John Sanford addict, but this one did not make it for me. The crooks were too stupid, the plot too straightforward, the solution too easy. It would not do to discuss the plot details, but most of the time in this series, the solution is a combination of cleverness on the part of Flowers and a minor slip by the bad guys, or something Flowers latches on to. These crooks are hopeless, and as the story moves along, are simply more hopeless.
There are some disconnects in the story - at one point Honus is with the girlfriend and then is magically transported from Frankie's place to Virgil's Mankato home. Sanford novels are usually more carefully crafted than that. For my money - part of Virgil's character is the ease with which he charms all women (okay, I am envious). Virgil is a one woman guy in this book - nothing wrong with that, but it takes something off of his character.
