THE TENDER TEXAN is one of Ms. Thomas' earlier works, and I believe was actually her third novel which was originally published in 1991. I've read nearly every one of her historical romances, but after seeing some of the negative reviews for this I have to admit I put off reading it for that reason. I expected it to be just okay, but have to say that I really enjoyed it and was much better than I had anticipated. If there's one thing I love about Jodi's stories, its her unique and one-of-a-kind characterization. The setting is 1846 Texas and stars Anna, a 20-year-old pregnant and widowed German immigrant and Chance, a 19-year-old loner. How I loved Chance! After the death of his parents some seven years earlier, he's been on his own. He is thoughtful, kind, generous, and intelligent. Though he is young, he seems and acts much older than his years, mainly due to his many hardships. Ms. Thomas amazingly gives us a virgin hero, but without taking away from his masculinity. Anna's had some horrible experiences and though I didn't hate her, neither did I love her. I didn't like her treatment of Chance, and she was much too stubborn and prideful for all concerned. Whereas Chance never thinks he's good enough for her, I in turn often felt Anna wasn't deserving of him.
With that being said, this was an adventurous tale and I was never once bored while reading it. It was fast paced and filled with many wonderful and memorable characters. My only complaint would be with Anna's attitude which was at times callous and even ungrateful, and the reason I gave it four-stars instead of five. I also felt that the ending was abrupt, and think this is one of those books in definite need of an epilogue. The most important thing however, is that this story made me feel! It engaged me emotionally and I cared for the people in it. Overall a great book that is well worth reading and a must for all Jodi Thomas fans =)

The title tells you all. A strong growing love between two very unlikely people, but it keeps blossoming and the main character truly is tender.
Jodi Thomas draws me into every book with a sense that I belong there. Regardless if historic western or living in Harmony and all the stories and characters in between I feel a connection. Wonderful adventures with Ms Thomas, even if she chose her pen name from her loving husbands first name
First, let me say that I am a HUGE fan of Jodi Thomas' books. But "The Tender Texan" just left a lot to be desired. First, the female lead is annoying at best. We get it... she was raped and had a tough life. Does that give her a right to be wretched to people for months when they have shown nothing but kindness? She acted downright heartless at times, with zero consideration for Chance, his feelings, or his future. Secondly, we're supposed to believe that Chance is a 20 year old, uneducated, rough and tumble texan. So why does he talk like a poet? If I hadn't paid so much for the download, I would have stopped reading long, long before the end.
This book is honestly kind of boring and trite. It never really goes anywhere. The main characters really just rehash the same conversations with each other and themselves over and over again.
Normally I really like JODI THOMAS' books which is the reason I ordered this book along with its bargain price. This, to me, was not one of her best. I have never seen a woman so hard to please with such a loving, caring husband. She had so much and could not see it. I think she needed counseling from her past experiences. This is NOT a keeper.
Love the author. Have most of her work.
I am such a fan of Jodi Thomas and her characters from West Texas. She writes of places that are familiar to me although she changes the names "to protect the innocent". I can visualize the people in her stories. I have empathy for them. It is difficult for writers to have the power to win you over with their characters but Mrs. Thomas does that with every book. She is my favorite author in her genre.
